Buick reveals Cruze-based saloon

US firm downsizes by introducing Cruze-sized saloon to US market
The Buick Verano will be one of many stars shining at the Detroit Motor Show. The saloon is based on the same GM Delta II platform used by the Chevrolet Cruze, and proves that the US market is embracing the trend for downsizing.

The four-door Verano is front-wheel drive only, and will arrive in the US late in 2011 with a 175bhp 2.5-litre direct injection petrol engine connected to a six-speed auto gearbox. In 2012, it’ll be joined by a 2.0-litre turbo petrol too.

Buick is described as GM’s entry-level luxury brand. And as a result, the Verano comes with 17-inch alloys, 10 airbags and touch screen sat-nav as standard. Options include heated steering wheels, keyless go and automatic climate control.

Prices for the Verano are set to start at around USD21,000 (£13,500), rising to USD26,000 (£17,000) for a top-spec model.
